The transformation of technology sets new standards
The development in data processing and printing technology is becoming faster than ever. The characteristics of the most up-to-date newspaper technology are rapidly strung together in the digital age: printing works and systems must function quicker than ever, more reliably than ever and more efficiently than ever and in the process provide optimal colour possibilities for advertising customers and the editorial staff. If printing machines were previously replaced with the diagnosis of weakness due to old age at the earliest after 25 years, in the meantime, a "moral deterioration", as Richard Zöller, head of the printing centre likes to call this technical transformation, is setting in much earlier: "The investment intervals are becoming shorter than ever."
Thus, in mid-1998, the start of the end of the EXPRESS rotation came, 13 years after its first operation, in the then new Niehler Printing Center, - at the beginning, one thought this could definitely be used for at least 20 years. It was replaced by an 1100 tonne heavy allrounder of the company Koenig & Bauer called "Commander". The machine, 72 metres long and more than 13 metres high, prints, if it needs to, all pages in four colours - and this noticeably more quickly.
Confidence in the printing medium - safeguard the future
through investments
With large-scale investments, the M. DuMont Schauberg printing company has been investing in the future of printing technology and thus in the future of newspapers since mid-1998. The list of innovations contains the manufacture and printing plates (computer-to-plate, CtP) and the new rotation with fully automated paper reel storage. Moreover, between 1999 and 2005, five new production lines were put into operation in the further processing / delivery department. For this, a new production hall was constructed. All of this documents the efforts to further automate production processes and replace complicated organizational procedures with the digital technologies.
Technical progress in harmony with the world of
work
The topic of protection of the environment and safety-at-work played an important role in the procurement. During the ongoing production, all commands from the electronic control panel may be given in the noise-proof room. Moreover, cross-walls contain the sound of the other machine sections. So that the printers do not have to stay too long in the noise areas, the colour pigment supply is also controlled automatically. Black, EXPRESS red, cyan, magenta, yellow as well as two further special colour pigments are pumped directly through a system of pipes to the corresponding print position. The roll conditioning fluid is sprayed on through nozzles. New air conditioning technology blows cool air and sucks up warm air, without giving rise to draughts.
